Your rights

Independent Mental Health Advocate

You’ll be supported throughout your stay at Thorneywood Unit by our Independent Advocate, Jo Kelly.  Jo is based on the unit three days a week.  She will introduce herself to you shortly after you arrive here.

The Advocates role is to support you to have a direct say in issues that affect your care, either in partnership with you or on your behalf if you don’t feel able to speak up for yourself.

She can provide you with a range of information; enabling you to explore options and help you make informed decisions appropriate to your own individual needs, wishes and goals.

Jo’s support may also include:

  • your rights whilst an inpatient;
  • support/representation in meetings;
  • benefits entitlement and information on services available in the community.

Sometimes people have to come into hospital and be treated under The Mental Health Act (MHA). The advocate can help you understand how the MHA applies to you, any treatment you may receive and your rights under the act.

The Advocacy service is confidential except in exceptional circumstances, the advocate will explain to you when information has to be shared without your permission.
